2008 Grand National Show a Huge Success
Congratulations to the Grand National Show Committee for pulling together one of the best Grand National Shows in recent years!  Despite the low economy, the attendance was very good.  The new facility was impressive and enjoyed by all, many vendors were present for shopping, the fiber show was the largest ever, the parties were enjoyed by all, and the classes ran smoothly exhibiting  gorgeous animals.  The overall atmosphere was one of excitement, great camaraderie, and fun throughout the weekend.  Many thanks to all ALSA members who attended this event!  Your support is greatly appreciated!

New Database/Show Management Program Due Complete
 by middle of March, 2009
The BOD has approved to move forward with the development of a new Database/Show Management Program for ALSA.  Scheduled to be completed early in 2009, the program that ALSA will own will create a powerful solution that will help maximize the efficiency of the ALSA business processes today while remaining scalable to expand in features and functionalities to grow with ALSA’s needs.   The Show Management Solution will include the following (and more) high-level features:
*  Because the solution will be web based, the system can be accessed from any internet connection world-wide with the proper permissions.
*  The ability to track and manage all show related information with the system.
*  The ability to view a calendar of upcoming shows.
*  The ability for a Show Superintendent to create and submit a show online.
*  The ability to add/edit an unlimited number of classes.  Once entered within the system, classes  will be available for selection during show creation and entering a show.  Show entries will be able to be entered online.
*  The ability for a Show Superintendent to enter results for a show by the classes.  The Show Superintendent will assign the “place” order and all points will be automatically assigned.  All results and points will be tracked within the individual animal and owner records as well.
*  The ability to track and manage all member related information including contact information, dues, judging, and awards.
*  The ability to track dues information including payment amount and date.
*  The ability for members to register online.
*  The ability to track and manage all animal related information including, but not limited to, name, ALSA number, ILR number, DOB, type, sex, sire, dam, owner information, points, awards, and championships.
*  The ability for members to register animals online.  The animal will be assigned to a member at the time of creation and owner information will be accessible from the animal record.
The ability for members to register for shows online.  Member will enter membership number and the rest of their information will automatically be populated.  When member enters animal ALSA or ILR number, the animal information will automatically be populated.
*  The ability to track and manage award related information including all awards, points, and championships.
*  The ability to assign awards to a member.  All points and awards earned will be viewable from a member record.
*  The ability to create a solution that meets the current needs and goals of ALSA while allowing for growth well into the future.  ie. the printing of show certificates which will include animal ownership, animal genealogy, animal photos, all ALSA points, awards, and championships; the creation of a storefront; the creation of a lama market where owners may create their own ads for animals, breeding, equipment, or gifts & misc.
*  ALSA will be provided full ownership of the final solution once completed and tested.  This will allow ALSA to make use of the solution as it sees fit moving forward.

The 2008 ALSA Grand National Show has not been cancelled!
Due to the concern of the current economy, gas/diesel prices, etc, a newsletter and survey
was sent out on 6-18-08 to the entire ALSA membership regarding attendance at the ALSA
Grand National Show in Lincoln, NE the end of October and the 2008 Regional Shows.  Results
of the survey were reviewed and discussed by the ALSA Board of Directors, the Finance
Committee, the ALSA Treasurer, and the Grand National Committee.  All finances were reviewed intently and input from the membership was of great importance to the final decision made.  With watching our expenses carefully and with everyone working hard to encourage attendance at both our Regional Shows and the Grand National, we feel that our association can make this event happen.
Attendance is the key factor for keeping ALSA financial losses to a minimum!
In addition to support of attendance, support is also needed with show sponsorships.

Just for the year of 2008,
to encourage the absolute necessity of good attendance for all the Regional Shows and the Grand National Show,  two qualification changes have been made.  For this year only, no previous qualifications are needed to attend a 2008 Regional Championship Show.  You may show at any Regional Show you select.  This offers one more additional opportunity to qualify for the 2008 Grand National Show.  Also, starting this year each Regional Show will have a membership meeting and elect a spokesperson to represent and bring Regional issues to the National Membership Meeting.  Your input is important to these Regional meetings.   To qualify for the 2008 Grand National Show, you must have earned a Grand or Reserve Grand Champion placing or a 1st or 2nd placing at any ALSA show held since the 2007 ALSA Grand National Show.  In addition, placings 1st thru 6th at any Regional Show will qualify an animal or exhibitor for the  2008 Grand National Show.

Since the announcement made to the membership on 7-2-08, we are excited to announce that further negotiations have successfully been made with the Lancaster Event Center to lessen minimum financial requirements even further.  We can assure you, the ALSA membership, that all financial obligations for these shows have been carefully reviewed and altered to keep financial losses to a minimum.  The most important thing now, and the main thing crucial to the success of these annual shows this year, is the support of the ALSA membership with attendance and sponsorships.

If you have comments regarding the above, we encourage you to post them on the ALSA
Discussion Board to share with the membership, the BOD, and committees.

Classic Llama Class Approved
A proposal from the Show Management Committee for a Classic Llama Class was approved by the BOD as an optional ALSA class.  The class will be accepted at ALSA shows for 24 months in order to confirm that numbers merit the class being added to Regionals and the Grand National Show.  It is the Show Superintendent's decision to offer the Classic class at shows.  The Classic Llama definition is:

*  Double coat with prominent, abundant guard hair throughout coat.
*  On the body (except juveniles and yearlings), undercoat has moderate to sparse density
and is either minimally or not at all visible under the guard hair.
*  Very short smooth fiber on face, ears, forehead and head.
*  Short leg fiber above the knee or hock and short smooth or minimally ruffled hair below
       the knee or hock.
*  A large "window" of short, smooth hair on either side of their sternum.
*  Neck fiber that often sheds out leaving a discernable guard hair "mane".

Show Superintendents  *  Exhibitors

The ILR number for each registered animal must be included on all results sheets for each show or when registering an animal for the ALSA Points Program. The ALSA database needs the ILR registration numbers to increase accuracy when posting show results and tracking points.

NOTE:  Registration rules have not changed.  An animal who is not registered with the ILR, but meets the exceptions stated in the 14th edition of the Handbook, p. 18, may still show in an ALSA Show.    We are just requesting that all ILR numbers of registered animals be submitted with your show results.  Thank you for helping us improve accuracy.

ALSA Fees For Fleece Shows

ALSA fees for a Fleece Show are $3.00 each entry ONLY if the entry is not entered into a Halter or Performance class at the show.  If the animal is also in a halter or performance class, the $5.00 ALSA fee also covers the fleece class - there is no other ALSA fee.

New BOD Members for ALSA
Changes to the ALSA BOD have occurred in December, 2007 and again in January, 2008.  In December 2007, President Wally Baker resigned from the BOD.  His position was filled by Vice President, Ken Fenley.  As a result of a threatening phone call with a death threat to his family and animals if he did not resign from the ALSA BOD, Ken regretfully resigned from the BOD on January 6, 2008.  Elected Vice President, Lora Crawford then filled the position of ALSA President.

With the resignation of BOD member Ken Fenley on 1-6-08, and due to the fact that he had more than six months remaining in his term of office, the ALSA ByLaws specified that the next remaining candidate from our previous election be appointed to fill a vacancy on the BOD.  As to the direction from the ALSA attorney, the next eligible candidate to fill the BOD vacancy was Mary Alice Pilbin.  Mary Alice was appointed as a member of the ALSA BOD on 1-14-08 to fill the term of Ken Fenley.  Her term will expire in July 2009.  Julie Heggie has been elected to the position of Vice President by the BOD.
